The Saunderson Brothers are sons of techno legend Kevin Saunderson, recognized as one of the “Belleville Three” that crafted the original Detroit sound. Though musical greatness is in their blood, Dantiez and Damarii Saunderson have each earned their status as torchbearers for a new generation of techno innovators.
Dantiez grew up tagging along along with his father at gigs and in the studio. When he was 20 he decided to take a crack at production and spinning, a decision that breathed new life into Kevin’s KMS Records imprint, the studios of which he helped rebuild. His influences include the aforementioned techno originators as well as younger geniuses like Seth Troxler and MK, not to mention the textures of hip-hop music. In 2013 he put out his first single “Undergo”, and hasn’t looked back since, staying incredibly prolific. He most recently put out the hard-hitting collaboration with KPD featuring La Rae Starr entitled “Place Called Home”.
Older brother Damarii turned to music after an injury cut short his baseball career at 18. Until that fateful moment, he had mainly been listening to hip-hop with a passing interest in electronic music – which makes his ascension to expert techno producer all the more astounding. The work ethic of an athlete does wonders when you have the natural talent of a musician. His sound, a conduit of the Detroit vibe, is perhaps best experienced on his amazing original cut “Silent Disco”, the rework of “I’m A Tree” he did alongside Valentina Black, or his collaborations with L8M8 including this year’s “B.R.T”.
Together, The Saunderson Brothers have a sound that retains the spirit of pure techno, fusing it with next-generation flavors and pure originality. They will be showing and proving at Cielo on Thursday alongside some major secret guests. We can’t wait to see what they cook up!
