With 40 years’ experience rocking turntables and mixing boards alike, Tony Humphries has been a key figure in preserving the soulful vibes of dance music. His legendary residency at Zanzibar was extremely influential to what became known as the New Jersey Sound (Humphries himself is a Brooklyn native), and his work as a producer has altered the course of music. Perhaps you’ve heard of Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit”, sampled in The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy”, or any other of Humphries’ essential pieces including tracks with Chaka Kahn, Donna Summer, or Janet Jackson to name a few.
Joining Humphries on Saturday night will be of NYC’s prized selectors, Rong Music founder DJ Spun. His story begins in California, where his first gig was opening for Kurtis Blow in 1987, and since then he has rocked the decks alongside the likes of Francois K, Horse Meat Disco, Justin Strauss and The Martinez Brothers to name very few, not to mention his cult favorite remixes for Free Blood, Gavin & Robbie Hardkiss, Douglas J. Macarthy, TV Baby and James Chance. As the head of Rong as well as the curator of MoMA PS1’s Warm Up series, he’s created platforms for some of the most innovative minds in indie dance, house, and techno.
When these two masterminds take to Cielo’s Funktion-one system on Saturday, expect the most that dance music has to offer. Tony Humphries and DJ Spun have made and will continue to make creative waves that will be felt for ages to come.
