Danny Krivit Headlines a Night of Classics Tomorrow, March 28

Known as the master of disco edits and a guardian of early house music’s essence, Danny Krivit has only about 44 years’ experience behind the turntables. Guess you could say he’s no rookie. He grew up in a cauldron of soul, with a jazz singer mother and music manager father who set up a storied disco hot-spot known as The Ninth Circle. Hanging around with disco luminaries like Nile Rodgers led to an encounter where James Brown handed Danny Krivit a few of his white label releases, kick-starting the young teenager’s DJ career. Danny would eventually form a bond with Larry Levan who was fermenting the creation of New York City’s house scene at Paradise Garage, and the two perfected their craft together. Danny would eventually take to creating club edits, like his rearrangement of MFSB’s “Love Is The Message” which, according to Krivit’s recent Resident Advisor profile, “is considered by many to be the greatest edit of all time.”

Krivit is currently one of the forces keeping the spirit of urban disco and house music intact. He is the creator and resident DJ of 718 Sessions, a monthly collaboration with promoter Benny Soto, as well as the Body & Soul party that he runs with Cielo resident François K and Joe Claussel. Funky rhythms, blissful breaks and huge climaxes are his forte. In 2014, Quantize commissioned him for an installment of their Quintessentials comp series, and he’s got a few new edits in the chamber for launch in the near future.

We’re pleased to have Danny Krivit stop by to rock our Funktion-Ones on Saturday, along with a crop of next-generation discoheads that are carrying the torch for the scene. Nightchild label head Rissa Garcia is a New York City whose dedication to house has yielded a distinct talent for selection that can be heard on her new mix for Chicago’s 5 Magazine as well as the one she put together for the documentary Girls Gone Vinyl. Sean Cormac and Chili Davis are the brains behind Forward Disco a collective that provides original articles, podcasts and parties that aim to carry the original soul of dance music on into the future.
